Malaysian Forbidden Love – Between Race & Religion

it’s been a while since I drew anything ๐Ÿ™‚

In the previous General Election manifesto, Billi Lim promotes inter-marriage (malaysiakini). Similarly, RotiJalah and AK57 echoed the conversation in their blog.

Before we start bashing each other, let me ask you, did Billi Lim promote inter-faith or inter-racial? Inter-Faith is between religion and inter-racial is between race. We Malaysians, are sensitive about race issues, but when it comes to faith (religion), it is always a few notch higher.

Malaysian Muslims are governed by the syariah law. It states that anyone to marry a Muslim must convert to Islam. Although the syariah law is man-made, it is based on Qur’an and Hadeeth and it’s not something they come up overnight. A verse from the Qur’an, Al-Baqarah, 221.

“Do not marry unbelieving women (idolaters), until they believe…”

According to the Qur’an it is permissible for a Muslim to marry CHASTE men/women of the book. I have heard one scholar emphasize that not all Christians are lawful — only those who have never fornicated and who guard their modesty are lawful.

However, the problem arise when raising kids. Surely you will tell your kids the importance of Islam. Naturally, what you explain will be in direct contradiction to what your spouse explains. You will be left with no alternative but to compromise the message of Islam and face the consequences or live with great tension.

And so, there is a fine line between Muslim-Christian marriage.

I fully support Billi Lim’s idea of inter-racial marriage. However we must adhere and embrace the fact that, religion rules cannot be changed nor altered to fit ones desire. It’s like the traffic light. It’s a general rule understood by everyone. Unless you want to kill yourself, go ahead slam the accelerator when the red light is on โžก
